Mastodon is an American sludge metal/progressive metal band from Atlanta, Georgia, formed in 1999. The band comprises bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor. They have released seven full-length albums to date, expanding their musical borders from early raw sludgy riffs to later psychedelic multi-layered songs, yet maintaining progressive style with unusual time signatures and odd instrumentation. Pteranodon is the brainchild of Jeff Suthers and Shannon Stein, former members of Volplane and Bright Channel, and current members of Moonspeed. With only one organ and one guitar, Pteranodon was designed to be a lush and gigantic listening experience that combined their love of minimalist musical styles with their equal appreciation for maximum volumes. Codona was a free jazz and world fusion group which released three self-titled albums on the ECM label in 1978, 1980 and 1982. The name of the group is derived from the first two letters of each of the member's first names: Collin Walcott (tabla, sitar, mbira, percussion), Don Cherry (trumpet, melodica, organ, Doussn'Gouni; hunter's guitar), and Naná Vasconcelos (berimbau, percussion, voice). Multi-ethnic improvisational music, mostly stemming from Walcott's interest in Eastern Indian rhythms and Vasconcelos's Brazilian heritage.
