Several ensembles have been using the name Kilimanjaro. The most prominent is an improvisational jazz project formed by members of the now defunct band As Tall As Lions. Kilima Hawaiians is a Dutch band, which got started by Bill Buysman in 1934 as "Kilima Hawaiian Trio". In 1936 he was joined by his wife Mary Buysman. They had their first recordings in 1941, which made them already quite successful in a very short time. In 1942 bass player Wim van Herpen joined the trio and the band changed name to "The Kilima Hawaiians". The Blue Hawaiians are a surf-rock group from Los Angeles. They formed in 1994 to play at the opening of their friend Michelle's club, The Lava Lounge. They rose to fame soon thereafter due to the rise of one of their earliest fans, Quentin Tarantino, and an appearance on the soundtrack of the hit TV show Friends. The group have since released several albums which have generally fared well with critics. The band also does music for the hit cartoon series "SpongeBob SquarePants". The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble (TKDE) formed in 2000 as a project to compose new music for existing silent movies. Jason Köhnen (aka Bong-Ra) and Gideon Kiers (Telcosystems), both graduates of the Utrecht School of Arts, combined their audio and visual skills to reinterpret classic movies by F.W. Murnau (Nosferatu) and F. Lang (Metropolis). They split up in 2014. Even though it wasn't officially announced, Jason Kohnen mentioned it on his new project's Facebook page.
