The versatile norteño band Beto y Sus Canarios were formed in 1987 in Huetamo Michoacan, Mexico, sometimes called the Tierra Caliente. Musical director Gabino Garcia approached Edilberto Portillo with the idea early that year and the two went to work auditioning and recruiting members, settling on musicians who had not been in any type of musical group before theirs. Los Canarios was a Spanish band that started playing back in the early sixties. They were knowm as Los Ídolos but changed their name to The Canaries and travelled to The United States in 1965. They did a beat album there, recorded at the RCA studios in Los Angeles. They had signed a contract with The Tokens' production company. The LP wasn't released then, and the band returned to Spain.
