Virgos Merlot was a hard rock band formed in 1998 in Birmingham, Alabama. Their singular album, Signs of a Vacant Soul, was released in 1999, and featured densely-produced atmospheric guitars, a heavy rhythm presence, and the commanding vocals of lead singer Brett Hestla.
Perhaps due to lackluster sales and its lukewarm critical reception, the original lineup disbanded sometime after the release of Signs of a Vacant Soul. Nathaniel Virgo is a sound artist who to date has released music primarily under the name Escape from the Head Cube. Virgo is studying for a PhD in thermodynamics and ecosystems, and creates live electronic performances by interacting with complex dynamical systems.
Some of his more recent work involves creating pieces of music which can be expressed 140 characters or less of SuperCollider code. Some of these were included on the "sc140" album of such pieces by various artists (supercollider.sourceforge.net/sc140/).
