Stinky Toys were a punk/new wave band formed in Paris, France in 1976. They are notable for their influence on the history of punk music, having directly inspired Malcolm McLaren. In the autumn of 1976 the band took part in the 100 Club Punk Special in London which showcased eight punk bands, most of which were unsigned. After two albums and little success, Stinky Toys sadly split in 1979, but singer Elli Medeiros and guitarist Jacno went on to form the electro-pop act Elli et Jacno which had considerable success in France. British jazz-rock group formed in the late 1970s by improvising pianist Veryan Weston. He started the group while on a fellowship with the Digswell Arts Trust in Hertfordshire, where he worked with saxophonist Lol Coxhill. Other members were guitarist Gary Peters, Cliff Venner (drums), saxophonist Simon Picard and electric bassist Dan Brown. The band's name originated from some fresh winkles bought by Coxhill in Southend-on-Sea and left in his van. According to Weston, after a seeing a gig "Lol rediscovered his winkles in the van. Very little was ever conventional about Stinky Fire Engine. The "band" was conceived in 1988 by Wayne Davidson for the Toytown compilation Fingernails. At that stage the SFE sound was basically audio collage using nicked bits of records (mainly kids albums) - each song formed a sort of story from the assembled bits and pieces. Originally SFE was going to be a magazine, and the sound collage tracks were an extension of that plan.
