Lafayette Gilchrist is a jazz-inspired pianist born in Washington, DC, and now based in Baltimore. He has worked with saxophonist David Murray in his Octet, and has recorded five albums under his own leadership between 2001 and 2008, of which the last, "Soul Progressin," won Best Jazz Album in the 2009 Independent Music Awards. His music has also been used in the television series "The Wire." He currently leads the group "Lafayette Gilchrist and the New Volcanoes." .
Lafayette Leake (June 1, 1919 - August 14, 1990) was a blues and jazz pianist, organist, vocalist and composer who played for Chess Records as a session musician, and as a member of the Big Three Trio, during the formative years of Chicago blues. He played piano on many of Chuck Berry's recordings. Leake was born in Winona, Missouri in 1920. Lafayette Thomas (June 13, 1928, Shreveport, Louisiana – May 20, 1977, Brisbane, California) was an American blues singer, and guitarist. He first heard blues guitar from his uncle Jesse Thomas in Shreveport, but Thomas did not play professionally until 1947, in San Francisco, California. The bulk of his recordings were with Jimmy McCracklin's combo in the 1950s and 1960s.
