Stockholm's folk-tinged indie pop combo Heikki features the core duo of guitarist Jari Haapalainen and vocalist Maria Eriksson along with a revolving cast of supporting musicians. Haapalainen, who also plays with the Bear Quartet and has produced albums by Nicolai Dunger, Ed Harcourt, the (International) Noise Conspiracy, and the Concretes, among others, and Eriksson, who also plays guitar with the Concretes, met and began working together in 1999 as Heikki (taking the name of Haapalainen's Finnish grandfather). Heikki Hela (b. 1964) is a Finnish entertainer, actor and musician, best remembered for his role in the early 1990s hit show Kummeli and his hit song Uneton Yö, featured on his debut album, Kaikista Kaikkein. Composer and pianist Heikki Sarmanto (b. 1939), started playing jazz already in the 1960's. He studied at the Sibelius Academy and Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1970 he was chosen Jazz Musician of the Year in Finland and the following year he won top prizes at the Montreux Jazz Festival in both piano and combo categories.
