FENCE OF DEFENSE was formed in 1985 and began performing publicly in 1987. The band consists of three people: Masatoshi Nishimura (vocals, bass, keyboards), Wataru Yamada (drums), and Kenji Kitajima (guitar). Each had previously worked separately as session musicians. When they began playing the hard rock which made full use of electronics, it had a big influence on the music scene of Japan, making them pioneers, somewhat, of the digital hard rock sound throughout Japan. .

The band began as a side project for John Stirratt, who is best known for his work as bassist for alt-country bands Wilco and Uncle Tupelo.
