Ben Folds Five is a trio formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States in 1994, who until their breakup in 2000 were a mainstay of Piano rock. Much of their work was influenced by jazz, evident in frequent improv-styled passages through bridge and/or ending. The members of the band are Ben Folds, the lead singer and pianist, who also wrote most of the songs; Robert Sledge on bass; and Darren Jessee on drums. Benjamin Scott Folds (born September 12, 1966, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina) is an American singer-songwriter. He is widely known for his prowess as a pianist. Ben Folds' musical career started to get off the ground in the late '80s, as bassist for band Majosha, after playing bass and piano at Pinehurst, in a group known as the "Caroliners" with cohort Millard Powers in 1985-1987; he also played drums as a session musician in Nashville. The Centerfolds were a three piece band hailing from Riverside, California. Their influences include the Descendents/All, Bad Religion, Nirvana, The Police, Face to Face, MxPx, the Beatles, Green Day and the Cure. The Centerfolds have put out one full length CD, Maybe Next Time, on Moose Records, and one seven song EP which they released on their own Ridgemont Records in 2002. They have also appeared on numerous compilations and even organized/funded two samplers of local bands that were passed out for free all over California.
