Nazwę Judas Priest zaczerpnieto z tytułu piosenki Boba Dylana "The Ballad Of Frankie Lee And Judas Priest". Początkowo występowali w nim K.K. Downing i jego bliski przyjaciel, basista Ian Hill. Skład uzupełnili Alan Atkins (śpiew) i John Ellis (perkusja). W 1971 do grupy dołączył nowy wokalista Rob Halford oraz perkusista John Hinch.
