Utworzona w 1998 w Wilkes-Barre w Pennsylwanii, USA przez wokalistę Bena Burnleya i perkusistę Jeremy'ego Hummel'a, grupa Breaking Benjamin szybko znalazła sobie lokalnych fanów. W 1999 grupa zmieniła tymczasowo nazwę na "Plan 9". Pod koniec roku 2000, po wielu zmianach, grupa zmieniła z powrotem nazwę na "Breaking Benjamin" do której dołączyło dwóch przyjaciół Burnley'a, Aaron Fink oraz Mark James Klepaski jako gitarzysta i basista, którzy opuścili swoją dotychczasową kapelę Lifer.
