W 1994 roku, w Londynie, Brian Molko i Stefan Olsdal założyli zespół Ashtray Heart, szybko przemianowany na Placebo. Używany początkowo automat perkusyjny zastąpił Robert Schultzberg. Na początku 1996 roku Placebo dostrzegł David Bowie, który po przesłuchaniu jedynie demówek zaprosił zespół do supportowania go, podczas światowego tournée.
