Urodził się jako Farrokh Bulsara 5 września 1946 na Zanzibarze (obecnie część Tanzanii). Jego rodzice, Bomi i Jer Bulsara, byli zaratusztrianami. Freddie uczęszczał do szkoły w Panchgani (niedaleko Bombaju). W tym okresie zaczął uczyć się gry na pianinie.
