プログレッシヴ・ロック・バンド“マンドレイク”を母体に1979年に結成。
同年、シングル「美術館で会った人だろ」とアルバム『イン・ア・モデル・ルーム』でデビュー。
“テクノ・ポップ”ブームの牽引役として一躍時代の寵児となる。
3rdアルバム『ポプリ』(81年)以降は音楽スタイルもメンバーも1作ごとに変化。
ポップ・ミュージックであることを前提にしつつも、常に革新的な音楽実験を繰り返してきた。
結成20周年にあたる1999年にはメジャー・レーベルを離れて「音楽産業廃棄物～ P-MODEL OR DIE」と銘うったプロジェクトを展開。
プロ・ミュージシャンとしては初となるインターネット上での有料音楽配信を開始するなど、新たな作品配給の在り方を提示して音楽業界に衝撃を与える。
2000年からは、1988年の“凍結”、1993年の“改訂”に続く3度目の活動休止である“培養”期間に入った。
これまでの参加メンバーは全16人(うち1人はCG)で、12枚のオリジナル・アルバムのほか多数の作品を残している。 .

1. Rockets' history starts in Paris (France), in the year 1972, when they were known under the name Crystal. In 1974, they changed their name to Rocket Men (or Rocketters) as five aliens, bald, with grey eyes, silver skin and space suits, recording the single 'Rocket Man' produced by Claude Lemoine, who would become their producer 'til 1983.
