ロック・バンド、ザ・ビートルズのギタリストとして1962年にデビュー。1970年の同グループの解散後は、ソロ・アーティストとして活動。「マイ・スウィート・ロード」「ギヴ・ミー・ラヴ」「過ぎ去りし日々」「セット・オン・ユー」などをヒットさせた。また1988年にはロイ･オービソン、ボブ･ディラン、トム･ペティ、ジェフ･リンらと覆面バンド、トラヴェリング・ウィルベリーズを結成し、2枚のアルバムをリリース。
彼の死後、2002年には遺作として「ブレインウォッシュド」が、息子であるダーニと友人ジェフ・リンのプロデュースによってリリースされた。 .
