Nils-Aslak Valkeapää, (Sami language Áillohaš, also kown as "Ailu") (March 23 1943 - November 26 2001) was a Saami writer, musician and artist of Finnish citizenship born in Enontekiö in the Finnish part of Lapland. Significant portions of his life he lived in Käsivarsi, close to the border to Sweden, and also in Skibotn in Norway. It is sometimes said that Valkeapää is the Sami person who is most well known internationally. Niko Valkeapää (raised in Enontekiö, Finland) is a Finnish-Norwegian and Sámi singer-songwriter. Since 1990 he's been living in Kautokeino where he started out as a teacher. He is the godson of artist Nils-Aslak Valkeapää, and quoted some of Nils-Aslak's texts on his two albums, which have become a part of the "thrid wave" in the modern Sámi culture, on which he has worked with Georg Buljo, and several other artists.
