Jawoll wurde 1981 von Kornelia Scholz und Matthias Kutschke an der Kasseler Kunsthochschule gegründet. Der Gitarrist Robert Foster war Engländer; daher komponierte die Band anfangs ihre Lieder noch größtenteils auf Englisch, so u.a. auch ihren späteren Erfolgstitel „Taxi“. Inspiriert von der Band Ideal entschloss sich Jawoll, nur noch auf deutsch zu komponieren. Es waren nur wenige Auftritte nötig, um von Rüssl Räckords, der Plattenfirma des Komikers Otto Waalkes, entdeckt zu werden.
