Il trio originario, The Blue Velvets, costituito da John Fogerty, Cook e Clifford, si forma nel 1959 a El Cerrito, California. Reclutato Tom Fogerty, a metà degli anni '60 la band firma per la Fantasy Records, che cambia il nome del gruppo in The Golliwogs, con riferimento a Golliwog, un pupazzo-menestrello di un libro per bambini.
