À l'origine dénommé "Polarbears", le groupe fut fondé en Écosse en 1994 par le guitariste et chanteur/compositeur Gary Lightbody et le bassiste Mark McClelland (tous deux Irlandais du nord) alors qu'ils étaient encore étudiants à l'université de Dundee. Du fait de considérations légales, le groupe dû changer de nom. En effet, un groupe américain, mené par l'ancien bassiste de Jane's Addiction, portait déjà ce nom. C'est ainsi qu'ils adoptèrent le nom de "Snow Patrol".
