Le Modern Jazz Quartet est un groupe de jazz américain formé en 1952 par Milt Jackson (vibraphone), John Lewis (piano, directeur musical), Percy Heath (basse), et Kenny Clarke (batterie). Connie Kay a remplacé Kenny Clarke en 1955. Milt Jackson, Lewis, and Clarke ont joué pour la première fois dans un quartet alors qu'ils faisaient partie du Dizzy Gillespie orchestra, de 1946 à 1950. Contrastate were formed in 1987 by Stephen Meixner and Jonathan Grieve. Their initial musical ventures were of a more improvisational nature, based on noise and volume (not to be confused with power electronics). Sounds emerged, sub-merged and re-emerged at varying painfully low frequencies with extremes of treble tonality. The idea was physical confrontation through sound. Nothing was ever released by Contrastate in this form, although some influences from this era are present on the first Lp “Seven hands seek nine fingers”. Pulse State started in the late 90's as an emotional outlet for the Detroit based musician Mike Phipps, who also uses Pulse State as a pseudonym. Moving through different electronic styles during its lifetime, Pulse State has been operating in the melodic EBM, electro-pop and darkwave spheres for some years now.
