Le groupe se forme sous le nom de «The Farriss Brothers » à Sydney, Australie. Il est composé d'Andrew Farriss Jon Farriss, Tim Farriss, Michel Hutchence, Kirk Pengilly et Garry Gary Beers. En 1978, le groupe se déplace de Sydney à Perth, un voyage de 7,000 kilomètres pendant lesquels ils passent 10 mois à écrire et jouer dans les bars, motels et villes de mineurs. A Sydney, rebaptisé INXS, ils font un début remarqué le 1er septembre 79, à l'Hôtel Oceanview. Les premiers singles d’Inxs sont « Simple Simon » et « We are vegetables ». Aussi sortis en France....
