Después de intentar tocar diversos instrumentos, David Sanborn, emprendió seriamente su estudio del saxo alto a los catorce años, apenas recuperado de un proceso grave de pulmonía. Comenzó a tocar en la zona de St Louis como bluesmen de Little Minton y Albert King. Por esa época conoció a las jóvenes promesas del jazz, Randy Brecker y Keith Jarrett.
