John Charles Waite (* 4. Juli 1955 in Lancaster) ist ein englischer Rocksänger, Bassist und Songschreiber. Sein größter Hit war Single Missing You (1984)
1976 war John Waite Leadsänger der britischen Band The Babys. Nach deren Trennung startete Waite seine Solokarriere mit dem 1982er Album Ignition. Das zweite Album, No Brakes, machte ihn international bekannt. Es enthielt den Hit 'Missing You', der es auf Platz 1 der US-Charts schaffte, aber auch in Europa in die Charts erreichte. Bis 1987 erschienen zwei weitere Alben, Mask of Smiles und Rovers Return.

Kindheit
Sein Vater hatte Vorfahren in Irland, seine Mutter in Norwegen. Beide arbeiteten als Lehrer. Als sich Waits' Eltern 1960 scheiden ließen, zog seine Mutter mit ihm und seinen beiden Schwestern nach National City (San Diego). Im Alter von 15 Jahren begann Tom Waits bei Napoleon’s Pizza in National City zu arbeiten. Diese Zeit bezeichnete er als große Inspirationsquelle für seine späteren Lieder. The Whatt Four released two amazing 45s in '66 and '67, both regional hits on KFXM in San Bernardino.
They cut two originals for their first 45 on producer Gary Paxton's own ESP label. "You Better Stop Your Messin' Around" alternates between moody verses, deadly lyrics ("you say you're shopping, but ... someone else is buying you!") and an upbeat chorus. Great harmonies and a driving bass line really propel this track. It was backed with the raver "Our Love Should Last Forever", featuring Tom Ference's slamming drum beats and John Langdon's piercing guitar work.
