Jeff Christie hatte seine Karriere bei verschiedenen Bands begonnen, unter anderem bei den Outer Limits. 1968 schrieb er den Titel Yellow River und bot ihn den Tremeloes an. Diese nahmen das Lied auch auf, verzichteten aber auf eine Veröffentlichung. Stattdessen gründete Jeff Christie kurzerhand eine eigene Band, zu der neben Gitarrist Vic Elmes auch Mike Blakey, der Bruder von Tremeloes-Mitglied Alan Blakey, gehörte, und veröffentlichte das Lied. Es wurde zu einem Welterfolg. Mit San Bernadino konnten sie direkt an den Erfolg anknüpfen. Doch schon vor dem zweiten Album verließ Blakey die Band....
Die Gruppe wurde 1971 unter dem Namen Shacklock gegründet, benannt nach dem Gitarristen Alan Shacklock. Weitere Gründungsmitglieder waren Janita Haan und Dave Hewitt. Später kamen Dave Punshon und Dick Powell (der Bruder des Slade-Schlagzeugers Don Powell) hinzu. Ihre erste Veröffentlichung war die Single Elusive. Das erste Album, First Base erreichte Goldstatus in Kanada.
1973, bei der Produktion des zweiten Albums, ersetzten Ed Spevock und Chris Holmes Dick Powell und Dave Punshon. 1975 wurde Chris Holmes durch den Keyboarder Steve Gurl von Wild Turkey ersetzt. Im selben Jahr schied Alan Shacklock aus und wurde durch Bernie Marsden von Wild Turkey ersetzt....
