Tracy Chapman (* 30. März 1964 in Cleveland, Ohio) ist eine US-amerikanische Sängerin und Songschreiberin. Schon als Kind lernte Chapman Gitarre und Klavier spielen und schrieb erste Songs. Mit Hilfe eines Stipendiums absolvierte sie eine Privatschule in Connecticut und studierte anschließend, ebenfalls dank eines Stipendiums, an der privaten Tufts University Anthropologie und African American studies. Zu dieser Zeit nahm sie ihre ersten Demos auf. Der spätere Filmemacher Brian Koppelman, damals ein Kommilitone von Chapman, arbeitete in der Plattenindustrie, und so erhielt sie 1987 einen Plattenvertrag bei Elektra Records.

1966 schloss sich Chapman in Leicester der Band The Farinas an, die sich ab 1967 Family nannte. Zuvor hatte er in anderen Bands in Leicester gesungen, etwa bei The Rockin' R's, The Exciters und Danny Storm and the Strollers. Nach dem Ende von Family gründete Chapman 1974 mit Charlie Whitney (Gitarre) die Band Streetwalkers, die bis 1977 bestand.
