The Sword ist eine US-amerikanische Heavy-Metal-Band, die 2003 in Austin (Texas) gegründet wurde. Ihren ersten Liveauftritt hatte die Band am 18. März 2004. Kurz darauf veröffentlichten sie die Demo The Sword. Es folgten weitere Konzerte u.a. auf Festivals. Mitte 2005 wurde die Band schließlich von dem New Yorker Plattenlabel Kemado Records unter Vertrag genommen, wo schließlich im Februar 2006 ihr erstes Album Age of Winters veröffentlichts wurde. Das Material dazu stammte fast ausschließlich von John D. Cronise und entstand noch vor der Gründung von The Sword. In den Jahren 2006 und 2007 folgen Touren mit u.a. Trivium, Kylesa, In Flames...

I. The Word is an instrumental/Sacred steel/gospel blues jam band. The supergroup included well-known musicians: Robert Randolph (pedal steel guitar), John Medeski (keyboards), and all three members of North Mississippi Allstars - Luther Dickinson (electric guitar), Cody Dickinson (drums, washboard), and Chris Chew (bass guitar). The Word developed from a mutual affection for gospel music and the Sacred Steel tradition shared by Medeski and members of the North Mississippi Allstars, both having discovered the phenomenon through a series of albums published by Arhoolie Records in the 1990s and early 2000s.
